As a Man Thinks

A Midnight Thought

There are moments in the night when everything grows quiet.
When the noise of the world fades,
and the heart begins to speak more honestly.

Midnight Thoughts is a space born in those hours—
between darkness and dawn—
where faith, struggle, and hope meet
one breath at a time.

Tonight’s reflection is called:

As a Man Thinks

Two Verses That Reveal the Inner Life

Lately, I’ve been thinking about two verses that speak directly to the hidden world inside us.

The first comes from Book of Proverbs 23:7:

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

The second is found in Book of Proverbs 4:23:

“Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it.”

Together, these verses reveal a single truth:

What you think shapes who you are.
And what lives in your heart shapes everything you do.

Your heart is the source.
Your thoughts are the blueprint.
Your life becomes the result.

The Warning Hidden in Proverbs 23:7

Most people quote Proverbs 23:7 as encouragement toward positive thinking.

But in its original context, the verse is actually a warning.

It describes sitting at a table with someone who says,
“Eat and drink!”
while inside their heart is calculating, resentful, and insincere.

Their words sound warm…
but their thoughts are cold.

God is showing us something important here:
a person’s true identity is not found in outward behavior,
but in the thoughts beneath that behavior.

This is why Proverbs 4:23 urges us to guard our heart.
Because eventually, the heart reveals itself—
in our words,
in our actions,
and in our attitudes—
whether we want it to or not.

How These Verses Speak Into ALS

When I was diagnosed with ALS,
these verses took on a deeper meaning.

ALS strips away so much—
mobility,
freedom,
independence.

It forces you to live life from the inside out.

And in that space,
your heart becomes your world.
Your thoughts become your environment.

If I allow fear to dominate my thoughts,
fear begins to shape my identity.

If I dwell on loss,
my entire world becomes loss.

If bitterness or unfairness takes root,
I slowly become someone I don’t recognize.

That’s why Scripture says:

“Above all else, guard your heart.”

Because the heart isn’t just another part of us—
it is the place where our emotional
and spiritual life flows from.

ALS may weaken my body,
but if I don’t guard my heart,
it can weaken my soul.

And yet, something remarkable happens
when I choose what I allow into my heart.

When I fill it with gratitude…
with the presence of God…
with memories of blessing…
with hope beyond pain—

peace begins to flow.
Strength begins to flow.
Life begins to flow.

Not from my muscles—
but from my heart.

Living From the Inside Out

Proverbs 23:7 reminds me that
what I think is shaping who I am becoming.

Proverbs 4:23 reminds me that
what I allow into my heart shapes everything I do.

Together, they give me direction.

They whisper:

Guard the thoughts you feed.
Protect the heart you carry.

Because in a storm like ALS,
your thoughts can either save you…
or drown you.

And this battle isn’t won with strength,
movement,
or ability—

it’s won in the heart.

Quiet Invitation

In this quiet midnight moment,
I remind myself of something important:

I am not what ALS has taken from me.
I am what I choose to hold inside.

My thoughts shape my identity.
My heart shapes my life.
And what flows from it
is who I truly am.

If you find yourself in a difficult season tonight,
pause for a moment.

What are you allowing to live in your heart?

Because even when circumstances cannot be changed,
what grows inside you still can.

Closing Reflection

As this Midnight Thought comes to a close,
I’m reminded that even in the quietest hours,
we are never alone.

The night may still feel heavy,
the road ahead uncertain,
but hope often whispers
before the dawn arrives.

May you find peace in the stillness,
and strength for whatever lies ahead—
one breath at a time.

Until next time,
God bless.
